LEDAS Improves Variational Sketching Usability with Release 2.2 of its LGS 2D Geometric Solver

Current release is mainly devoted to diagnostics improvement. LGS 2.2 introduces new semantics for diagnostics of model overdefinedness. Previously, any cycle of constraints, that contained superfluous, i.e. redundant, constraints, was marked as overdefined. From now, LGS user may choose (by setting corresponding context option), whether to mark overdefined cycles, that consist of logical (non-dimensional) constraints only. Moreover, significant changes in diagnostics algorithms were introduced in LGS 2.2, in order to improve the detection of subtle dependencies. Some techniques for improving naturality of obtained solutions were also added.

LEDAS Helps CAD/CAM/CAE Developers Efficiently Model Large Assemblies with LGS 3D Geometric Solver Version 1.5

New version 1.5 of LGS 3D significantly improves the performance of moving under constraints functionality that now runs five times faster than previously, as measured on a test base extracted from several hundred user scenarios of LEDAS customers. LGS 3D 1.5 also provides new integration possibilities for CAD/CAM/CAE developers. Its new thread-safe code solves an arbitrary number of parametric models simultaneously.

White paper 'Variational Direct Modeling: How to Keep Design Intent in History-Free CAD'

What is better: history-based modeling or direct modeling for 3D design and editing? Both approaches have their advantages and their drawbacks. Can smart parametric editing be be combined with simplicity of user's manipulations? The answer is in the new technology - variational direct modeling: using geometric and dimensional constraints to define the desired model behavior when modifying the model. A variational direct modeler simultaneously satisfies all constraints in contrast to the history-based consequence in parametric modeling. The set of constraints is a declarative construction to be interpreted uniformly regardless of their history. At the same time, constraints expressivities are sufficient to specify features and links between them. Constrains are set not only by a system user but also by the system itself which automatically identifies them building the original model or importing the model from another system. As a result, there is an easy-to-use tool to control feature concept of a product, which can adequately replace the current history-based and direct geometric modeling systems, combining their pluses and concealing their minuses. This paper describes advantages of variational direct modeling applications for the end-users.

White paper 'Common Pitfalls in Parametric CAD Systems' by Dr. Edgar A. Gerteisen, Daimler AG

Parametric CAD Systems promise great potential with regard to product optimization. A given parametric set may be varied to produce variant instances of the geometry that further are going to be functionally assessed by means of computational methods, so-called CAE methods. If such a methodology is being embedded within a numerical optimization procedure, e.g. evolutionary strategies, the parametric set that rules the geometric and thereafter the functional behavior may converge to an optimum or at least may lead to an improvement of the corresponding product. In the present investigation some limitations of parametric CAD systems are figured, if intended to be applied in the context of numerical optimization. Specifically, the non-uniqueness of geometric constraint solving leads to robustness issues when applied in automatic geometry update cycles upon parameter variation. The suggested enhancement with regard to the geometric interpretation of distance and tangency strives towards a more reliable parametric CAD system.

LEDAS increases the productivity of LGS 2D variational geometric solver

The main goal of the current release is to improve of solver quality, i.e. such characteristics as success rate, performance and naturality of obtained solutions, rather than add a new functionality. New powerful decomposition techniques were presented, which improves performance up to 2.5 times over the previous version. LGS 2.1 introduces a new feature linking help parameters of curve constraints to variables in the same way as the parameter of dimensional constraints. Important news is that 2.1 version LGS solver is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Windows and Linux platforms.

New release of LGS 3D, a three-dimensional geometric engine used for CAD/CAM/CAE parameterization.

The main advantage of the new 1.4 release is performance of the Move Under Constraint functionality that is accelerated sevenfold by implementing new heuristics. New API functions that enable storing and restoring LGS 3D context to/from a file or a binary data array have been introduced as well as tolerance management functions. The Lege’n’d 3D demo application is switched to the OpenCASCADE 6.2 version and is now able to export models to IGES/STEP formats.

The LEDAS Company opens new direction of geometric solvers development with release LGS 2D 2.0

The main new feature of the recently released version 2.0 is its capability to deal with discrete entities in a geometric model. The difference between real-life engineering and pure math problems is that real designs often contain parts and elements of standardized sizes or sets of predefined mechanisms configurations and models. Now any licensee of LGS 2D 2.0 has capability to specify the table constraint which lists all possible combinations of values of different variables in the model and ensures that LGS 2D selects one of these configurations during computations, providing a user with a solution consistent from engineer point of view.
