LEDAS and FIT NSU announce a strategic educational training initiative for CAD/CAM/ CAE/PLM/ERP software development specialists

The constantly increasing demand for science-intensive software development specialists has been the impetus behind the LEDAS and FIT NSU announcement to create a strategic educational initiative. The program is aimed at training CAD/CAD/CAE/PLM/ERP specialists through joint cooperation with the Faculty of Information Technologies at Novosibirsk State University (FIT NSU).

Currently, most advanced industry oriented technologies recognize computer aided design, engineering, manufacturing (CAD/CAM/CAE) as well as integrated product lifecycle management (PLM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) as essential parts of the overall design process

At the same time most software development companies are well aware that recent graduates qualified in IT systems, computer engineering, or applied mathematics do not yet have the required skills to apply their university knowledge in practice. This steep learning curve makes it difficult for CAD/CAM/CAE development companies to recruit new employees without allocating significant additional resources for training and staff education.

Yet the continuous growth of the Russian CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM/ERP market and overall IT business sector demands that software development companies constantly hire new and highly skilled programmers. As noted by world renowned analysts, the science intensive outsourcing taking place in Russia has already attracted the attention of European and US companies. This interest is projected to grow for some time and will only increase the demand for more qualified developers in the future.

In response, LEDAS has made the decision to invest in its own educational program in conjunction with FIT NSU. The resulting program is centered on applied education and will provide:

  • Organization of special courses for bachelor and master degree students with emphasis on:
    • introduction to the information environment in modern enterprises integrating PLM, ERP, CRM, and SCM systems;
    • mathematical background of computer aided design, manufacturing, and engineering;
    • CAD/CAM/CAE architecture;
    • programming and project management technologies in science intensive research and software development projects;
  • Organization of CAD/CAM/CAE workshops and development courses using commercially available software with special educational licenses
  • LEDAS Internships
  • Course material publication

As the first practical step in the strategic program, LEDAS specialists have begun teaching a special course entitled "Introduction to the mathematical methods in computer aided design" to masters degree candidates at FIT NSU, General Informatics Department. The program consists of 15 lectures beginning in the fall semester and covers all the main mathematical aspects of CAD/CAM/CAE such as feature based parametric design, structural optimization, kinematics analysis, and finite element analysis. Over 150 pages of extended annotation for the course have recently been released by LEDAS and can be located at: http://www.ledas.com/publications.php. Following university approval, the materials are intended for publication as a monograph for use in other universities.

The program initiators are confident that this long-term strategic investment in practical, industry oriented education will meet with real world success, particularly in the context of the Novosibirsk IT-park project.
